The Do's and Don’ts of Motorcycle Safety

Riding a motorcycle can be an exhilarating experience, but it’s still important to take extra precautions on the road. As a rider, you’re more exposed to the elements and road conditions than drivers in fully enclosed vehicles. Taking the right steps will help you stay safe while keeping your motorcycle insurance rates low. Here are some basic do's and don’ts you should know.
Do:
Dress the part.
Protective gear is essential when riding a motorcycle because it's your best defense against outdoor conditions. Wear a helmet, protective eyewear, and gloves to cover some of the most vulnerable parts of your body. Choose long pants and a jacket made from thick materials that are designed to withstand wear and tear, including kicked-up road debris and pavement if you’re in an accident.
Check your bike.
Even if you’re sure it’s in good shape, check your motorcycle thoroughly before each ride. Assess the condition of the mirrors and lights and check the tire pressure to ensure safe operation and handling. Look carefully for any signs the bike may be compromised, like loose parts or leaking hoses. If there’s a problem, resolve it before your ride.
Don’t:
Use the shoulder.
It may be tempting to dodge traffic, but never ride the road’s shoulder. Just like other vehicles on the street, motorcycles need to follow the rules of the road. By law, you also can’t overtake or pass a car in the same line or travel between vehicles. Essentially, behave like you’re driving a car when sharing the road.
Follow too closely.
In the same vein, avoid following the vehicle in front of you too closely. Tailing other vehicles increases the risk of an accident if the driver hits their brakes suddenly, and the incident could increase your motorcycle insurance rates. Following another driver too closely also makes it hard to see obstacles. Keeping your distance allows you to plan for upcoming curves and changes in road conditions that would require action.
